Dear ladies and gentlemen,
Dear company representatives and entrepreneurs,
Dear friends and supporters of German-Japanese cooperation,
It is my great honor and pleasure to lead this year’s delegation trip to Japan. My home state, North Rhine-Westphalia, is famous for its longstanding and close ties to Japan, evidenced for example by the second largest Japanese business community in Continental Europe. More than 600 Japanese companies in North Rhine-Westphalia contribute to the tremendous innovative power of our region and appreciate our state’s dense research network, well-developed infrastructure and strategic location in the center of Europe.
In addition, more than 100 companies from North Rhine-Westphalia – large players such as Bayer, Henkel, Metro, Miele or Oetker, but also many small and medium-size enterprises – run subsidiaries and representative offices in Japan. Many more companies from our state export to Japan or cooperate successfully with Japanese companies in global value creation and in opening up third markets.
Utilizing the current momentum of the Japan-EU Economic Partnership Agreement, this delegation trip has been organized to deepen and broaden these existing relations with special focus on smart mobility and medical technology. The transformation of the mobility sector from a mobility “machine provider” to a mobility “service provider” with electric drivetrain, big data, autonomous driving and other high-tech and digital capabilities will affect business and people’s lives in Germany and Japan. At the same time, it creates countless opportunities for new technologies, business models and services. Japan and North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s economically strongest state, are perfect partners to take the challenges ahead and jointly advance their position as global leaders in the mobility sector.
Next to the subject of smart mobility, it is my great pleasure to intensify our state’s cooperation with our partners of Fukushima Prefecture in the field of medical technology. Already since 2014, North-Rhine Westphalia and Fukushima Prefecture have worked together in this promising field of high technology. This year, our delegation will visit the Medical Creation Fukushima 2018, a leading trade fair on medical technology.
This brochure provides an overview of the different experts and entrepreneurs from North Rhine-Westphalia participating in the delegation trip to Japan. Please take the opportunity to get in touch for an exchange of ideas and for identifying areas of mutual interest.
With warm regards,
